Slime vs putty vs dough vs kinetic sand
Four squishy materials that behave completely differently. Which one you want.
Based on Amazon sales and review data checked August 2026.
These four get lumped together and they should not be. They differ in how they stretch, whether they set, how much mess they make, and how long they last. Pick by behaviour, not by packaging.

Common questions
What is the difference between slime and putty?
Slime is wetter and stretches into long strands before breaking; it sticks to surfaces and dries out over weeks. Thinking putty is silicone-based, does not stick or dry, bounces when thrown, and tears cleanly when pulled fast. Putty lasts far longer.
Does kinetic sand dry out?
No. Kinetic sand is coated in silicone oil that does not evaporate, so it stays workable indefinitely. If it feels stiff, working it in your hands warms it back up.
Is air-dry clay better than Play-Doh?
They do different jobs. Play-Doh stays soft so you can re-use it forever, which suits open-ended play. Air-dry clay hardens permanently, which is what you want if the child wants to keep the thing they made.
